A Thanksgiving Prayer Outline

"O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever." 1 Chronicles 16:34

This time of year our emphasis is always on thanksgiving and we certainly have much to be thankful for. In spite of many disappointments in our country, we are very grateful for the privilege of living in America.

Following is a short outline that helps me be thoroughly thankful in my daily prayer life...

  1. Thank God for Spiritual Things.  Such as, salvation, forgiveness, the indwelling Holy Spirit, assurance of salvation, Word of God, chastening of the Lord, answered prayers, Scriptural promises, etc.  Be sure to include such things as delays, challenges, and lessons God teaches us through our failures.  Keep a written list of spiritual things to thank God for and add to the list on a continual basis as God brings things to your mind.

  2. Thank God for Physical Things. Such as a home, plenty of food, health, vehicles, job, freedoms, provisions, etc.  By including seeming unpleasant things like sickness, or financial challenges we are enabled to see God's hand in even the trials of life. Again, add to this list and over a period of time it will grow to be quite a lengthy list.

  3. Thank God for People. Obviously our family and loved ones come to mind right away.  Included on this list would be the members of our church, folks who have had significant influence in our lives, co-workers, etc.  We also want to include those who are not so pleasant to us, antagonistic to us, or could even be considered our enemies.  God uses both the positive and seemingly negative folks to develop our Christian character and strengthen our faith.

It is a shame that we do not have this emphasis upon thanksgiving throughout the entire year.  How much more pleasant our lives would be, how happier our homes would be if we thanked God for all things continually throughout the year.
